Mayor of sanctuary city says migrant crisis is ‘certainly not of our making’
Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser declared a public emergency over buses of migrants that continue to arrive in the city from Texas and Arizona on Thursday.

Bowser’s emergency declaration will set aside funding to accommodate migrants as well as create the Office of Migrant Services. The OMS will be tasked with providing temporary accommodations, urgent medical needs, transportation” and other services for migrants.

“We’re putting in place a framework that would allow us to have a coordinated response with our partners,” Bowser said Thursday. “This will include a program to meet all buses, and given that most people will move on, our primary focus is to make sure we have a humane, efficient, welcome process that will allow people to move on to their final destination.”
“Regardless of the federal response — which I think has been lacking in some respects — that the District of Columbia would continue to work with partners to advance what we need and ensure our systems in D.C. are not broken by a crisis that is certainly not of our making,” Bowser added.

Fed’s Powell Affirms Need to Act Strongly on Inflation
Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said the central bank is squarely focused on bringing down high inflation to prevent it from becoming entrenched as it did in the 1970s, firming expectations of a third consecutive 0.75-percentage-point rate rise later this month.

“It is very much our view, and my view, that we need to act now forthrightly, strongly, as we have been doing, and we need to keep at it until the job is done,” Mr. Powell said Thursday morning at a virtual conference hosted by the Cato Institute.

Mr. Powell didn’t say anything to challenge market expectations that the Fed would raise interest rates by 0.75 point at its Sept. 20-21 meeting, as opposed to a smaller increase of 0.5 percentage point, or 50 basis points, that some policy makers have favored.

Clark: Lawmakers must reauthorize home-visiting programs to bolster child care
The success of our workforce begins before birth. This may seem unexpected to some, but research tells us that a nurturing, healthy foundation beginning at pregnancy and early infancy can help set the stage for future academic and career achievement, leading to a stronger American workforce.

That’s why it is so important to invest in the earliest years of our children’s lives, not just for their benefit, but for the sake of America’s long-term economy.

Early intervention is key. Also crucial are voluntary home-visiting programs, which are evidence-based interventions that help support parents and their children by identifying families with high-priority needs and pairing these vulnerable families with trained professionals such as nurses, social workers, or parent coaches.

The home-visiting providers then assess the individual needs of each family and provide parenting support and education to help create a solid foundation for the child and their parents.
